socket 939

Socket 939 can support single and dual channel processors although not all 939 motherboards with their 'native' BIOS will be able to support dual channel. Nonetheless it may be possible to download the latest BIOS file for your motherboard which may provide the facility to recognise dual channel CPUs. This can usually be done by visiting the website of the motherboard manufacturer and downloading the latest revision of the BIOS files.

AMD produced the following range of CPUs in socket 939 format:

  • Athlon 64 ............. (up to 2.4GHz)
  • Athlon 64 FX ......... (up to 2.8GHz)
  • Athlon 64 x2 ......... (up to 2.4GHz)
  • Opteron ............... (up to 3.0GHz)
  • Opteron dual core .. (up to 2.6GHz)
  • Sempron ...............(up to 2.0GHz)

The Athlon series are the most commonly found, however some motherboards are also compatible with the socket 939 Opteron and Sempron CPU's. It is always worth checking if there is a BIOS update that supports different CPU's to those that the original BIOS supported.

The Sempron range are widely regarded as the entry-level, no frills processor, it's name being derived from the Latin 'semper' meaning everyday. The Opteron was developed mainly to be used as a low-cost server processor and is available as a dual core.

The fastest CPU's for socket 939 are the Opteron ranges offering 3.0GHz processing speed for a single core (Opteron 156), and 2.6Ghz for the dual core version (Opteron 185). The Athlon FX-60 also offers 2.6GHz dual core operation. However as started earlier, not all CPU's are compatible with ALL socket 939 motherboards, and may require a BIOS update to work.

The Athlon 64 FX range are particularly sought after and can still command high resale prices even as used hardware.

Within the above range of CPUs are a variety of processors with differing parameters. Processing speeds vary from 1.8 GHz up to 2.8 GHz, and Level 2 cache varies from 256kb up to 1MB.
